The General Synod of the Church of England today discussed the guide “Some Issues in Human Sexuality”, the most recent report on the Church’s understanding of lesbian and gay people. Of the 15 speakers called in the debate, 10 spoke in favour of a change in the Church of England’s conservative position. They received the warmest and longest ovations from Synod members.
The Revd Colin Coward, Director of Changing Attitude, said: “This has always been seen as a conservative Synod. Today’s debate makes it clear that the mood has significantly shifted. The forced withdrawal of Canon Jeffrey John as candidate to be bishop of Reading, and the determination of Inclusivechurch.net that we should not fall victim to conservative sectarianism, has led many more Anglicans to speak out in favour of welcoming lesbian and gay people.”
