Open letter to the Most Revd Dr Rowan Williams and others

Open Letter to the Most Revd Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, the Anglican Communion Office and the Anglican Consultative Council

Changing Attitude has released the text of a letter sent to the Archbishop of Canterbury and others on 14 February 2006.

The letter asks the Standing Committee of the Anglican Consultative Council meeting in London in March 2006 to address recent events in Nigeria, in particular:

The press release issued on 28 December 2005, designed to undermine the reputation of Davis MacIyalla, Director of Changing Attitude Nigeria. The unsubstantiated allegations have put Davis’s life at serious risk, questioned his integrity, undermined the work of Changing Attitude Nigeria and caused great anxiety among group members.

The actions of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) which are poisoning the atmosphere in which the Communion-wide process of reception of the Windsor Report and monitoring of the listening process is taking place.

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has made a deliberate assault on the work of Changing Attitude Nigeria, their support of lesbian and gay Anglicans and their commitment to respond to the Windsor Report and contribute to the listening process.

The support given by the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) to the bill approved by the Federal Executive Council of Nigeria for an Act prohibiting marriages between people of the same sex, the public show of same sex amorous relationships and any person involved in the registration of gay clubs, societies and organizations, subject on conviction to a term of 5 years imprisonment.

We ask the Primates of the Anglican Communion to respect the dignity and integrity of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Anglicans and oppose all legislation designed to curtail their essential right to protection and freedom of association.
