Akinola denies describing homosexuals as ‘lower than beasts’

The Archbishop of Nigeria has denied claims in British newspapers that he ever described homosexuals as ‘lower than beasts’. He said that his opposition to homosexual behaviour arises not from personal animosity but from a concern that “false teachers are leading the faithful astray”.

The claim of bigotry arose in the wake of July 13, 2003, issue of The Economist which, relying upon a Nigerian press account of the Abuja Synod, cited Dr Akinola as having said: “I cannot think of how a man in his senses would be having a sexual relationship with another man. Even in the world of animals, dogs, cows, lions, we don’t hear of such things.”

In response to the charge of bigotry, Archbishop Akinola told the CEN, “When it comes to people involved in homosexuality there is no greater cruelty than to try to bless their behaviour and deceive them that it is right with God.”
