Changing Attitude Ireland comments on the election of the Most Revd Richard Clarke as Archbishop of Armagh

Canon Charles Kenny the Secretary of the Church of Ireland pro-gay group Changing Attitude Ireland congratulated and extended its good wishes to the Most Revd Richard Clarke on his appointment as the new Archbishop of Armagh. Canon Kenny expressed his hope that the new Archbishop of Armagh will engage with the Church’s gay members with a view to making  the Church a genuinely inclusive place for LGBT persons. Canon Kenny said that the exclusion of openly gay and lesbian persons from entering the ordained ministry and the exclusion in some parishes of gay men and women from Holy Communion were injustices in the Church which needed to be on the agenda of the new Archbishop. Canon Kenny added that gay and lesbian members of the Church were available to meet with the new Archbishop to discuss how the Church can move forward after the hurt felt by the Church’s LGBT members following the majority vote at the Church’s General Synod in May 2012 where same-sex relationships were declared to be not ‘normative’.
